I-9 Central

Federal law requires that every employer* who recruits, refers for a fee, or hires an individual for employment in the U.S. must complete Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Form I-9 will help you verify your employee's identity and employment authorization.

*NOTE: We will refer to both employers and agricultural recruiters and referrers for a fee collectively as "employers" throughout I-9 Central.

ALERT: The Administration is committed to restoring the rule of law with respect to Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Nonetheless, on March 31, 2025, Judge Edward Chen, a federal judge in San Francisco, ordered the department to continue TPS for Venezuelans. See National TPS Alliance, et al., v. Kristi Noem et al., No. 3:25-cv-01766 (N.D. Cal. Mar. 31, 2025). The court did so even though the TPS statute says that TPS decisions are not subject to judicial review. For more information, please see the Federal Register notice. DHS has every intention of ending Venezuela TPS as soon as it obtains relief from the court order. Further updates regarding TPS Venezuela will be posted on this webpage.

Alert: Employer Action Required – E‑Verify Mismatch Case Issue

E‑Verify recently experienced a technical issue with Social Security Administration (SSA) mismatch (tentative nonconfirmation) cases that were referred between April 9 and May 5, 2025. This includes cases involving dual SSA and DHS mismatches if the employee attempted to resolve the case by visiting an SSA office but did not contact DHS.
Secretary of Homeland Security Announces Termination of Designation of Afghanistan for Temporary Protected Status; EADs Expire on July 14, 2025

After reviewing country conditions and consulting with the appropriate U.S. government agencies, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has determined that conditions in Afghanistan no longer support its designation for Temporary Protected Status. Afghanistan’s TPS designation and related benefits terminate on July 14, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.
TPS for South Sudan Extended for 6 Months; EADs Automatically Extended Through November 3, 2025

The designation of South Sudan for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is set to expire on May 3, 2025. The Secretary of Homeland Security did not make a determination as to whether South Sudan continues to meet the conditions for designation for TPS by March 4, 2025, the statutory deadline. Accordingly, the TPS designation for South Sudan is automatically extended for 6 months, from May 4, 2025, through Nov. 3, 2025.
