Harriet Tubman
A scout. A spy. A nurse. An advocate. These are just a few of the titles used to describe a renowned freedom fighter and former enslaved woman. Harriet Tubman spent much of her life fighting for others. She was the first woman to oversee an American military action during a time of war, and was posthumously awarded the rank of general on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Born into slavery in 1822, she later escaped from Dorchester County, Maryland to Philadelphia where she lived as a freewoman.
Once free, Tubman dedicated her life to the abolition of slavery as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Earning the nickname "Moses", she travelled by night and in extreme secrecy, to and from the Confederate South to rescue slaves.
Plantation owners offered large rewards for her capture . After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide escapees farther north into British North America (now known as Canada), and newly freed to find work.
She then channeled those experiences as a scout, spy and nurse for the Union army during the civil war, helping guide 150 Black soldiers on a gunboat raid in South Carolina. Tubman made her last trip to Maryland in November 1860, around the time that Abraham Lincoln was elected president. She remained a philanthropist well into her later years, founding the Home for Aged & Indigent Negroes and supporting women’s rights.
Initiated by President Barack Obama in 2016, US Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced plans to have a portrait of Tubman featured on the front of the $20 bill. The Trump administration delayed the move.
If put on the $20 dollar bill, she will be the first African American to appear on a US banknote.
Monday’s commemoration is the first time Tubman has been officially recognized for her military service.
