Attorney General Nick Brown, is the first Black person elected to statewide executive office. He is Washington State’s 19th Attorney General, elected November 2024.
Brown grew up in Steilacoom, Washington, a small community southwest of Tacoma. He attended public schools and his parents were both public servants - his dad an Army veteran and mother a nurse and healthcare administrator. Nick joined ROTC to help pay for college -- graduating from Morehouse and then a law degree from Harvard University.
His legal career started in the Army JAG corps, where he gained experience as both a prosecutor and defense lawyer. He took on unscrupulous corporations and predatory lenders that were taking advantage of soldiers and their families, and defended the rights and liberties of young soldiers. Nick was awarded a Bronze Star in 2005.
After the Army, he returned home to work as a prosecutor, then as lead counsel for Governor Jay Inslee. During that time he had the opportunity to work on a wide range of legal issues. At the Inslee's direction, Brown led the death penalty moratorium in Washington State and then, during the first six months of the first Trump Administration, Brown worked directly with then-Attorney General Bob Ferguson over unlawful federal actions including the Muslim Ban.
Leaving Governor Inslee's office in 2017, Brown worked for one of the premier law firms in the region - counseling public, private, and non-profit clients navigate complex civil litigation and constitutional issues. Part of his work involved defending landmark gun safety legislation from legal challenges.
In 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Brown as the U.S. Attorney for Western Washington. Fighting drug cartels, sex trafficking, addressing the fentanyl crisis and reducing violent crime, he also chaired the Attorney General’s Advisory Subcommittee on Civil Rights. In 2023, Nick resigned from the U.S. Attorney’s Office to run for office.
