“There were lots of protesting and rioting during that time. I felt our community needed a voice,” said Bennett. “We needed to fully understand what was happening and how it affected our lives as African Americans. We needed a vehicle to speak out on our issues and concerns.” Christopher H. Bennett, is founder and owner of The Seattle Medium Newspaper, Kris Bennett Broadcasting, Inc., Tiloben Publishing, Inc., and runs four radio stations: KRIZ and KYIZ Seattle, KBMS Portland, and KZIZ Tacoma
After high school, Bennett entered the U.S. Air Force and eventually stationed in Everett, Washington. After a distinguished military career, he enrolled in Everett Community College on a football scholarship. While in college, he worked full-time as a juvenile counselor for the state.
In 1970, Bennett founded The Seattle Medium Newspaper. “It wasn’t the easiest decision for me to make [starting a newspaper] but I knew it had to be done.” With only 14 months of experience in the newspaper business," I had to go on a crash course in newspaper publishing and management.”
Bennett was the only one selling ads but the paper grew from four to eight pages within months of starting. Family members moved to Seattle to help with the business and in 1984, the radio stations in Seattle, Tacoma and Portland, Oregon were acquired.
Strong editorials set the tone for the newspaper and the small Black community newspaper quickly became one of the most quoted newspapers in the Pacific Northwest. The newspaper quickly gained local, regional and national interest as it would win many local and national awards for journalism excellence in news reporting, layout, design and advertising.
Today, Bennett's media enterprise continues to educate, inform, advocate, motivate and empower our community.
