The unemployment rate ticked up to 3.1% in Minnesota in March, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

The number of unemployed increased to 97,197 and the number of employed decreased to 3,052,604. The labor force grew to 3,149,801, and the labor force participation rate increased to 68.2%.

The U.S. unemployment rate increased to 4.2% in March, on a seasonally adjusted basis. The labor force participation rate increased to 62.5%.

Monthly Employment

Minnesota’s monthly job growth was positive in March as the state added 10,700 jobs, or 0.4% growth.

Eight of eleven published supersectors posted positive growth. Mining and Logging added 100 jobs; Construction added 1,900 jobs; Manufacturing added 1,500 jobs; Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 1,500 jobs; Professional and Business Services added 700 jobs; Education and Health Services added 3,600 jobs; Leisure and Hospitality added 800 jobs; and Government added 1,500 jobs.

Two supersectors posted decreases. Financial Activities lost 200 jobs and Other Services lost 700 jobs.

Employment in Information was flat.

U.S. total payroll employment was positive in March, adding 228,000 jobs, or 0.1%. Private sector employers added 209,000 jobs (0.2%) on a seasonally adjusted basis. Minnesota outperformed the nation in eight supersectors, and in total nonfarm employment.

Annual Employment

Minnesota over the year (OTY) payroll employment growth stood at 37,581 jobs, or 1.3%, the same level as in February. The private sector added 29,579 jobs, or 1.2% in March, which was higher than February’s 1.1%.

U.S. total nonfarm over-the-year job growth stood at 1.2% in March, the same as in February. Private sector employment growth was at 1.2%, also the same as the February rate.

Eight of eleven published supersectors in Minnesota added jobs over the year. Mining and Logging added 265 jobs (4.3%); Construction added 1,805 jobs (1.5%); Manufacturing added 949 jobs (0.3%); Trade, Transportation and Utilities added 1,158 jobs (0.2%); Professional and Business Services added 1,829 jobs (0.5%); Education and Health Services added 26,655 jobs (4.6%); Other Services added 1,398 jobs (1.2%) and Government added 8,002 jobs (1.8%).

Information lost 361 jobs (0.8%), Financial Activities lost 2,359 jobs (1.3%), and Leisure and Hospitality lost 1,760 jobs (0.7%).

Five supersectors showed strength over the year in Minnesota compared to the nation, as did total nonfarm employment, which was up 1.3% (vs 1.2% nationally). Mining and Logging was up 4.3% (versus -1.9%), Manufacturing was up 0.3% (versus -0.6%), Professional and Business Services was up 0.5% (vs -0.2%), Education and Health Services was up 4.6% (versus 3.4%), and Government added 1.8% (versus 1.3%).
