2025-2026 Planning and Programming Grants are open!

KDOT’s Planning and Programming (P&P) Grants provide resources to assist communities throughout the state create their SRTS plans, which can both help them plan for future SRTS efforts and build community momentum around walking, biking, and rolling to school. The 2025-2026 school year application period is currently open! Apply using this form by 5pm on May 2, 2025.

Transportation Alternatives Program

The Kansas Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program remains an eligible program under the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), signed into law November 2021, which reauthorized transportation funding and includes significant increases and changes to active transportation funding programs. Through the Kansas SRTS Program, funds are available to provide resources, technical assistance, and project funding to encourage and enable students in grades K–12 to walk, bike, or roll to school. A comprehensive approach to SRTS includes both infrastructure and non-infrastructure countermeasures and programs.

Eligible projects include:

  • Trails and paths

  • ADA and sidewalk upgrades

  • Streetscape improvements

  • And more!

On Feb 1, 2024, KDOT initiated the 2024 Call for Applications for the federal Transportation Alternatives program. KDOT hosted webinars that introduced and explained the program, and were specific to the two types of funding available – construction projects (including SRTS construction projects) and SRTS non-construction projects.

Grant Writing Assistance and Support

Kansas University - Center for Public Partnerships & Research offers grant writing assistance and support. In February 2025, we held a webinar for nonprofit organizations, state associations or coalitions, school districts, state agencies, and tribal councils in Kansas looking to build grant writing capacity and learn what it takes to prepare a successful proposal.
