“Ring of Dreams” at Wood County Fair for people with developmental disabilities
The livestock show pairs people with developmental disabilities with mentors and animals for a show-ring experience.
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - It’s fair season! Thousands of people will once again attend county fairs all over the region. And there’s a special event at the Wood County Fair again this year that is expected to draw a big crowd.
Livestock shows are an important part of any fair. The Wood County Fair hosts a special one called the Ring of Dreams. The event pairs mentors and animals with people who have developmental disabilities. Those involved say it’s been life-changing on several levels.
“I knew it would be special to this community, but I had no idea just how special. Last year we had 42 participants, and this year we have 53 signed up,” Amanda Barndt, the person whose vision helped bring the ring of dreams to life said.
And what sounds like a simple idea, has turned into so much more for everyone involved. Barndt said it’s created bonds that go far beyond the event.
“To see the participants throughout the year, they come running up to me and say there’s the Ring of Dreams lady. They know me. They know my face. It’s very special,” Barndt said.
Barndt said she was inspired by a similar program in Henry County. 4-H and Future Farmers of America members are paired with people who have developmental disabilities for a special livestock show. They work with rabbits, pigs, sheep, cows and goats.
“The animals are already super people friendly, but to see the calmness and patience the animals have next to a wheelchair is amazing,” Barndt said.
Several generations of Courtney Swartz’s family are part of the show. Her daughter Skylar Swartz shows goats and is one of the mentors.
“Skylar did it last year, and I was in tears. She had so much fun. It was a lot of work, but it was amazing. It teaches her to be humble. It teaches her that no two people are the same, and everyone needs to be treated equally,” Courtney Swartz said.
Skylar Swartz said she was excited to have a chance to be part of it again this year. She’s working with several people who will be in the show ring.
“I like helping people get better and making them happy,” Skylar Swartz said.
Christopher Schuckers is one of the dozens of participants. He’s excited to show Gypsy the goat this year.
“They have long ears and short necks. Goats are my favorite animal. They’re fat and fluffy,” Schuckers said.
The mentors and participants have a practice session tonight and the big show is just several weeks away. Barndt is expecting a packed house.
“It was standing room only last year and we’re expecting that again. So you need to get there early if you want a seat. It’s been incredibly special. I say this is truly the best thing I am part of,” Barndt said.
The Ring of Dreams Livestock Show is Aug. 1 at the Wood County Fairgrounds.
