AARP Livable Communities

The City of Culver City is proud to be a designated Age-Friendly City that is a part of the World Health Organization and AARP network. As part of its Age-Friendly Communities planning, the City pursued two projects: the age-friendly community survey and listening session series.  It also created an Ad Hoc AARP Age-Friendly Community Program Subcommittee, which guided the planning process.

The City continues to pursue initiatives that benefit folks of all ages within the Culver City community. Be sure to sign up for Senior Center email updates.

Background

The City conducted a community survey of individuals who are over age 50 and/or disabled (at any age). With AARP’s guidance, the City designed the survey to focus on interest areas and sent it to the community in a variety of ways over the course of approximately two months. Surveys were completed by 447 individuals.

Additionally, the City and AARP convened two community “listening sessions” on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 and Thursday, June 6, 2019. Seventeen people attended these sessions and offered valuable input.

Building an Age-Friendly Community

Following its October 14, 2019 meeting, the City Council directed staff to share findings with the General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) for discussion and consideration in the General Plan Update. The City Council also directed it be shared with the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission to identify actionable items for the Council’s consideration. Ideas were presented at the PRCS Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.

Age-Friendly Community Survey Findings

These in-person and virtual meetings were held in 2024 on June 27, June 28, July 10, and July 11. The results from the community engagement meetings, surveys, and listening sessions were included in the needs assessment report. These items will help create a five-year action plan that will organize and prioritize the City's work towards becoming a more livable city.
