The Division of Solid Waste Management of the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development formulates programs for the collection and disposal of solid waste (discarded material) generated within Dutchess County.
Our main function is to implement the Dutchess County Local Solid Waste Management Plan .
The three main goals of the plan are:
Reducing the amount of waste generated within Dutchess County
Registration for the June 7, 2025 Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection, being held at 626 Dutchess Turnpike in Poughkeepsie, is now closed as we have reached capacity. Our next event will be September 13th.
For a list of accepted and not accepted items please see the Household Hazardous Waste Event flyer (.pdf). The event is open from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. There are no appointment times.
(Please note: if you have oil- or latex- based paint, PaintCare drop off locations will accept these materials year-round. Paint will not be accepted at these events.)

The Division of Solid Waste Management in collaboration with Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension is launching a new program to offer home composting workshops. Residents can come and learn from an expert how to successfully compost at home. Composting is a way to recycle the food scraps we generate at home and can help reduce our community's waste stream.

Repair Cafes are free community events where you bring your broken but beloved items and volunteer repair coaches help you fix them!

Dutchess County holds a hazardous waste collection event for businesses, schools and farms that generate less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month. The 2025 event has concluded. For more information, email solidwastemgmt@dutchessny.gov or call (845) 463-6020.
