The Office of NEPA Policy and Compliance (GC-54) assists DOE program and field offices in ensuring that the Department's proposed actions comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and related environmental review requirements (e.g., National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act) that are necessary prior to project implementation. The NEPA Office maintains NEPA expertise to support activities covering nearly every facet of the Department’s diverse and complex operations.

NEPA: Better Information, Better Decisions. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires Federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, to consider the environmental effects of their proposed actions in their decision-making processes and inform and engage the public in those processes.

    Updating DOE's NEPA Implementing Procedures

    U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published an interim final rule in the Federal Register to remove most of the DOE regulations that contain its procedures implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) from the Code of Federal Regulations. For more information on the interim final rule, see 2025 DOE NEPA Rulemaking.

    DOE has prepared new procedures for NEPA implementation, published on the DOE website outside of the Code of Federal Regulations. For more information on the new procedures, see DOE NEPA Implementing Procedures (June 2025).
