HHS is working with other Federal agencies to provide key resources in one centralized location so all partners (e.g., states, beneficiary and provider organizations, and advocates among others) can better assist people with Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) renew their health coverage or find other coverage options that may be a better fit for them.
During the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE), HHS implemented special policies to ensure that as many people as possible had lifesaving Medicaid coverage while the pandemic was ongoing. Following the end of the pandemic-era special policies that temporarily paused renewals for Medicaid for approximately three years, states across the country began fully renewing people’s Medicaid eligibility in early 2023.
States are reviewing Medicaid and CHIP eligibility for everyone with this coverage to see if they are still eligible. If an individual is no longer eligible for Medicaid or CHIP, they may transition to another form of health coverage for which they are eligible, such as through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace or employer-sponsored coverage.
We need help from a range of partners to reach every person who was enrolled in Medicaid at the beginning of 2023 to keep them covered, whether that is through Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare, the ACA Marketplace, employer-sponsored coverage, or another source of coverage for which they are eligible. As such, HHS along with other Departments has developed a number of key resources for partners to use.
