  • How do data about the impacts of rising shipping costs improve the livelihoods of American farmers and U.S. economic competitiveness? An important piece of this complex puzzle is the Transportation Producer Price Index (PPI), which BTS releases each month to help researchers analyze data for ocean, rail, and truck freight and pinpoint specific changes in costs associated with various segments in the supply chain. For example, the PPI illustrates how subtle increases in transportation costs for U.S. agricultural exports erode this important industry’s competitive edge. Rising transportation expenses directly translate to higher final prices for U.S. goods abroad. This data-driven clarity supports new policies and targeted investments to improve port infrastructure, supply chain optimization programs, and trade policies. These adjustments aim to reduce freight costs, ensuring our agricultural products remain competitively priced globally and directly supporting the economic vitality of American farms and rural communities. This is just one example of how reliable transportation data from BTS helps turn complex economic challenges into actionable strategies for growth and national competitiveness.
