Can a train arrive before it leaves? Before 1883, the answer was yes! At that time, North America used more than 144 local times, making travel schedules so confusing that trains sometimes arrived earlier than they left! With the rapid growth of railroads, this patchwork of local times became a safety and scheduling nightmare. To solve it, major railroads introduced a coordinated system of four time zones in 1883, an innovation that revolutionized how Americans measure and organize time. Because standardized time was born out of transportation needs, the federal government placed oversight with transportation agencies. By 1918, the Interstate Commerce Commission officially adopted five time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, and Alaska. The creation of the Department of Transportation (DOT) in 1966 reinforced the uniform adoption of time zones and Daylight Saving Time (DST), regulated by the Uniform Time Act. Today, DOT continues to oversee time zones and DST to support transportation, commerce, and daily life. Any changes to time zone boundaries must serve the “convenience of commerce” and require approval from state or local officials. For instance, Mercer County, ND, officially switched time zones as recently as 2010. In 2019, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), in partnership with the DOT Office of General Counsel, developed a verified digital map of U.S. time zone boundaries. This geospatial layer, part of BTS’ National Transportation Atlas Database, provides authoritative, easy-to-access information about our nine official U.S. time zones, from Atlantic to Chamorro. Explore the interactive map and learn how BTS supports the smooth running of transportation and commerce by keeping America’s time zones clear and coordinated. How can we inform smarter transportation policies and business strategies by better understanding shifting consumer preferences and market trends in the passenger-vehicle sector? The answer begins with National Transportation Statistics (NTS)—the Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ (BTS’) resource presenting comprehensive data on the U.S. transportation system. Within NTS, the New and Used Passenger Car and Light Truck Sales and Leases dataset offers a timely and detailed view of the volumes, characteristics, and trends of auto sales and leases nationwide. (https://www.bts.gov/nts) This product tracks shifts between new sales and used automobile purchases, reveals the growing role of leasing, and highlights preferences by vehicle type and fuel efficiency. These insights are essential for policymakers and industry leaders as they shape emissions regulations; infrastructure investments, like EV charging networks; supply chain strategies; and mobility equity initiatives. For instance, detecting an increase in light truck leases helps anticipate changes in fleet turnover that impact safety, environmental outcomes, and economic performance. Meanwhile, trends in used car sales provide critical indicators about affordability and access to transportation for diverse populations. Thanks to BTS and its unwavering stewardship of NTS and its varied datasets, decision-makers have reliable, transparent, and current statistics to understand the transportation landscape, anticipate market changes, and build a sustainable, equitable, and efficient system. Explore the full NTS, and dive into the New and Used Passenger Car and Light Truck Sales and Leases data here: https://www.bts.gov/nts #TransportationData #AutomotiveIndustry #MobilityTrends #BTS #DataDrivenDecisions #SustainableTransport
