Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

When federal dollars are involved, safety and efficiency must be guaranteed throughout the life of the investment. That’s why Administrator Marc Molinaro announced that FTA will investigate how the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) stores its decommissioned electric vehicles following multiple battery fires among these assets. Safety will always be this administration’s top priority. Learn more: tinyurl.com/wjdfskva

Yesterday was a busy day for FTA Deputy Administrator Tariq Bokhari, who met with Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to check in on how federal transit investments are shaping the region. At Coconut Grove Station, FTA staff toured The Underline, a 10-mile urban trail and mobility corridor being built beneath the Metrorail. Portions of The Underline are already open, offering public space for walking, biking, and community use, while ongoing construction continues to expand its reach across the county. Supported by a $22.3 million U.S. Department of Transportation BUILD grant during President Trump’s first term, The Underline is a model for how federal funding can deliver long-term benefits beyond the station platform.

Since 2017, the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County has been working to make its bus system more accessible for all riders. To date, more than 5,600 bus stops have been upgraded to include features like wider sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, and tactile paving to assist riders with visual impairments. And the work isn’t done: METRO plans to make more than 700 additional bus stops fully accessible by year’s end. #ADA35

Last month, TriMet launched TriMet NEXT in Gresham, Oregon, a new paratransit pilot offering on-demand transportation for seniors and riders with disabilities. Previously, trips had to be booked at least a day in advance, but now they can be scheduled same-day, giving riders greater flexibility. Thank you, TriMet, for making public transit more accessible. #ADA35 tinyurl.com/3wtnwny4
