Improving public transportation for America's communities
About us
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) works to improve public transportation for America's communities. Since 1964, FTA has partnered with state and local governments to create and enhance public transportation systems. Today, we invest more than $20 billion annually to support and expand public rail, bus, trolley, ferry and other transit services. That investment has helped modernize public transportation and extended service into small cities and rural communities that previously lacked transit options. FTA also oversees safety measures and helps develop next-generation technology research. An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), FTA is headed by an administrator appointed by the President of the United States. FTA is one of DOT’s 10 modes of transportation and is run by a headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as 10 regional offices that assist transit agencies in all states and U.S. territories. FTA is an organization of more than 550 diverse, talented, enthusiastic people working to strengthen American communities, promote economic vitality, and maintain personal freedom through the development and support of public transportation.

Last summer, NJ TRANSIT unveiled its fully renovated Elizabeth Station, a vital transit hub in the Northeast Corridor. With over $77 million in FTA support, including approximately $30 million during President Trump’s first term, the project delivered major accessibility upgrades, including longer platforms, new elevators, and climate-controlled waiting areas. These improvements have made travel more accessible, ensuring all riders can navigate the system with greater ease, comfort, and independence. #ADA35 tinyurl.com/5cppp6np

After decades without major upgrades, MBTA’s Winchester Center Station is now open and fully accessible. Thanks to a comprehensive renovation, funded in part by a $5 million FTA grant during President Trump’s first term, the station now features two ramps and three new elevators, ensuring full platform access for all riders for the first time since the 1950s. #ADA35

FTA Senior Advisor Marc Molinaro visited Boston this week to meet with FTA staff and see firsthand how federal investments are advancing MBTA’s infrastructure upgrades. At North Station, MBTA leaders highlighted progress on the replacement of a key drawbridge used for commuter rail and Amtrak services, a $1.2 billion project FTA is funding in part through a MEGA grant. Advisor Molinaro also toured the Green Line, including the nation’s oldest subway tunnel, where major upgrades are underway to improve stations, accessibility, and service for T riders.

“This isn’t about how safe the system looks on a spreadsheet. It’s about how safe it feels on the platform.” In a new op-ed, FTA Senior Advisor Marc Molinaro challenges New York’s misleading crime stats and calls for honesty, enforcement, and accountability on Metropolitan Transportation Authority subways. Earlier this month, C-TRAN in Vancouver, Washington, broke ground on its third BRT route, the Purple Line, which will serve a 9-mile stretch along Highway 99, one of the region’s busiest corridors. With 32 new stations and safe, reliable service, the Purple Line will connect riders to schools, jobs, and opportunity, including the Vancouver Waterfront and Washington State University Vancouver. Service is expected to begin in 2027.

Kudos to RTD in Denver for helping to Make America Safe Again with its new online Safety & Security Dashboard, a major step toward greater transparency for riders and employees. Updated monthly, the dashboard tracks security related calls, criminal activity, and incidents per customer, part of RTD’s continued commitment to a safer, more accountable transit system. #TransitSafety #RTD #PublicSafety #Transparency
