Minnesota Commissioner of Health Dr. Brooke Cunningham has approved the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee's recommendation to add metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) to the list of conditions and to begin the steps needed to implement newborn screening for MLD. MLD is a genetic condition that affects the brain and nervous system. Thank you, advisory committee and workgroup members for your time and expertise during the review process. Thank you to providers, parents, and advocates for bringing these conditions forward to the advisory committee; future generations of Minnesota’s children and families will be healthier thanks to your work. https://lnkd.in/gczEt7j6

Air pollution affects everyone, but children and youth are particularly vulnerable because their bodies are still developing, and they breathe in more air than adults for their body weight. The Minnesota Outdoor Air Quality Guidance for Schools and Child Care is a resource that can help adults make decisions that will protect kids when air pollution levels are high. Everyone in Minnesota should have the opportunity to be healthy, no matter who they are or where they live. At the Minnesota Department of Health, we can’t succeed unless we work together in partnership with Minnesota’s local and Tribal health departments and their communities, to protect Minnesotans. Our state’s 74 local health departments and 11 Tribal health departments have the on-the-ground knowledge, connections, and experience to help every community thrive in Minnesota, from border to border. Public health experts all over the state, like those at Countryside Public Health in southwest Minnesota, partner with elected officials, community members, schools, businesses, health care systems, and more, to overcome all types of barriers people face to living their healthiest lives. We’re committed to cooperating together to care for Minnesota, and we won’t let you down when the going gets tough. https://lnkd.in/gSk4PVX5

Most employees of the Minnesota Public Health Laboratory are well-trained scientists who test for water contaminants, infectious diseases, and congenital conditions. Until recently, their job titles and descriptions did not do justice to their skills. Former “bacteriologists” and “environmental analysts” are now known as “laboratory scientists.”
