Researchers at the Mayo Clinic discovered a new species of bacteria thanks to funding from the Minnesota Department of Health’s Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence (PGCoE) program, which was established through financial support from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The bacteria was given the species name mayonis in tribute to the Mayo Clinic. The species is part of a genus, Corynebacterium, that includes many disease-carrying bacteria.
