Empowering Ohioans with disabilities through employment, disability determinations, and independence.
About us
Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) is the State of Ohio agency whose mission is to empower Ohioans with disabilities through employment, disability determination, and independence. OOD is proud to be certified as an Ohio Recovery Friendly Workplace. OOD helps connect the people of Ohio who have disabilities with the resources, support, and opportunities that fit their unique needs, abilities, and interests so that they can find and retain meaningful employment. Our Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR) and Bureau of Services for the Visually Impaired (BSVI) tag-team to provide these services in partnership with hundreds of providers across Ohio. Our Division of Employer and Innovation Services also helps Ohio companies recruit, retain, and achieve accessibility in the workplace for employees with disabilities. OOD also supports Ohioans applying for disability insurance or supplemental income by helping to determine whether they medically qualify for federal disability benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Our Division of Disability Determination provides this support in agreement with the SSA. Social media terms/conditions are at https://bit.ly/4hVmJJL.

The 2025 Ohio Sales Tax Holiday is set for August 1-14, offering Ohioans two full weeks of savings on certain supplies and essentials. “The timing of this year’s sales tax holiday not only supports families preparing for back-to-school, but also provides relief on other important household needs,” said Governor Mike DeWine. During this period, Ohioans can shop in-store or online for qualifying items. Exclusions include services, vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana-related products. Today, we celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! 🙌 The ADA is a vital civil rights law that ensures people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The act transformed accessibility and disability inclusion across employment, education, transportation, and public spaces. Both OOD and the State of Ohio remain committed to making sure that all individuals can fully participate in our communities, our workforce, and their daily lives. #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct #ADA35 #DisabilityInclusion

We're celebrating Ohio Service Dog Awareness Week! 🦮 This last week of July honors the hardworking service dogs that empower Ohioans with disabilities - including children, adults, and Veterans - to live independently, confidently, and safely. But not all support animals are the same! Here's a quick breakdown: ✅ Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks for people with disabilities, like guiding, alerting to seizures, retrieving items, and more. ✅ Emotional support dogs (and other animals!) provide comfort but aren't task-trained. ✅ Therapy dogs offer group emotional support in places like hospitals or schools. When you see a service dog, remember: ✅ Speak to the handler, not the dog. ✅ Don't pet, offer food or treats, or distract them. ✅ Keep your own dog at a respectful distance. Service dogs are life-changing assistive partners, not pets. Respecting them helps ensure access and inclusion for all. #OhioServiceDogAwarenessWeek #ServiceDogAwarenessWeek #ServiceAnimals #AllAboutAccessibility

We are gearing up to celebrate 35 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) tomorrow! 🎉 Signed into law in 1990, the ADA has been a transformative force in advancing the rights of Americans with disabilities, opening doors to greater access, opportunity, and disability inclusion for everyone. OOD and the state of Ohio remain steadfastly committed to these ideals. Through initiatives like #AccessibleOhio, OhioC2C (Ohio College2Careers), and the Ohio Vocational Apprentice Program, we continue working to ensure every Ohioan with a disability can fully participate in their community and achieve their employment goals. As Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel have affirmed in their proclamation, Ohio is proud to be a national leader in disability inclusion and accessibility. ➡️ View the Governor and Lieutenant Governor's full proclamation today: bit.ly/3U8WzIL #ADA35 #DisabilityInclusion
