METRO Gold Line Extension
To enhance regional mobility, the METRO Gold Line, which opened on time and under budget, will be extended to downtown Minneapolis. In 2027, Gold Line service will allow people to travel more efficiently between some of the region’s top destinations.
The Gold Line Extension will bring new, enhanced stations to I-94 and Snelling Avenue. In Minneapolis, the Gold Line Extension would use existing bus rapid transit stations on 7th and 8th streets, and bring customers as far as the METRO Green Line Extension’s Royalston Avenue/Farmers Market Station in Minneapolis. Learn more about the extension project.
METRO Gold Line project
METRO Gold Line bus rapid transit connects people across the region to job centers, housing options, transit stations and key destinations in the Interstate 94 corridor. The 10-mile bus rapid transit line connects St. Paul, Maplewood, Landfall, Oakdale, and Woodbury generally along I-94.
Gold Line is Minnesota's first bus rapid transit line that operates primarily within bus-only lanes. These lanes are dedicated only to transit buses, and are generally north of and near I-94. Gold Line has several features to ensure a comfortable ride and fast service:
- Frequent, all-day service in both directions
- Pre-boarding fare payment for faster stops
- Access to Park & Ride lots in St. Paul, Oakdale, and Woodbury
- Real-time arrival and departure information
- Heated shelters, lighting, and security features
The Gold Line Fact Sheet has more information on these features.
Guideway Safety
Neighborhoods and daily routes may look a little different. These safety reminders are meant to keep all road users safe when interacting with the Gold Line.
- Pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to use the sidewalks and shared trails along the route. The Gold Line guideway is dedicated for use by Gold Line buses only.
- Motorists are also not allowed to use the guideway, typically denoted by red paint. The guideway was built specifically to help Gold Line buses move quickly from one station to the next, and other motorists using the guideway will disrupt service.
Motorists may also notice new bar signals (also known as transit signals) along the service route. These white vertical and horizontal signals indicate to bus drivers, to either stop or continue through an intersection, and help safely manage local traffic and bus operations travel where they intersect.
Watch the Guideway Safety Video, to learn how drivers, bikers, and pedestrians can safely interact with the new Gold Line bus-only lanes.
Schedule
Remaining landscaping work will occur in spring 2025.
