Curated by immunization expert Dr. William Atkinson, this entertaining and historic collection of public service announcements (PSAs) and videos dates from the 1950s and includes video clips about vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases. The PSAs in this collection are from a variety of sources, including federal agencies, state health department, and private enterprises. Dr. Atkinson collected these videos from 1994 through 2012, during his time with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCRID). During these years NCIRD produced more than 100 vaccine training programs using satellite broadcast technology. Dr. Atkinson located these PSAs in the CDC film library, collected them from other CDC employees, and solicited them from state and local health departments. Many of the PSAs were incorporated into the satellite broadcasts. However, the majority of these PSAs have not been seen since they were originally produced. The videos were originally in many different formats including analog film, analog ½ inch (VHS), ¾ inch and 1 inch videotape and digital media such as DVD. Some of the videos have been copied many times. Analog recordings degrade each time they are copied (digital videos do not degrade when copied) so some of the early videos (1960s and 1970s) have poor quality audio and/or video because they are many copies distant from the original. They have been restored as best we could considering the poor condition of the copies we had available.
Dr. William Atkinson picks his top 10 favorite PSAs from his collection. For the entire collection of historical vaccine-related PSAs, visit www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqKEg4Y5HWfhvFBsqPR3-hr1oHYU7_efr
