Sacramento, CA - The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced the launch of the monitoring phase of the Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative (SMMI), a first-of-its-kind effort to collect neighborhood-level air pollution data in 64 communities heavily burdened by pollution. Beginning in June 2025, this pilot project will deploy specially equipped vehicles and mobile laboratories across 64 California communities that have long faced environmental disparities. Using advanced technology from Aclima, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, and Aerodyne, the initiative will collect block-by-block air pollution data to support community-informed actions that protect public health and improve air quality.
