CDFW for the first time has released juvenile fall-run Chinook salmon into the main stem of the Sacramento River near Redding and Butte City from state-operated hatcheries. The juvenile salmon come from additional salmon produced this year and are expected to imprint on the main stem during their migration to the ocean and speed the rebuilding of important spawning areas within the main stem after they return to freshwater as adults. A portion of these salmon are tagged with a coded wire that will allow CDFW to estimate the contribution of these releases to future returns of adult salmon.
