On a stormy night in Iowa, 2-year-old Arletteā€™s mild respiratory illness became a life-threatening situation. Fortunately, two local EMS agencies had prepared to ensure they had the right protocols, equipment, knowledge, and champions in place to be ā€œpediatric ready.ā€ The National Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Project empowers EMS and fire-rescue agencies to improve their ā€œpediatric readinessā€ or capability to care for acutely ill and injured children. A federally funded initiative of the Emergency Medical Services for Children Program -- in collaboration with 30 national organizations, federal partners, and experts -- the project provides EMS and fire-rescue agencies with free tools and resources for improvement, including an assessment opportunity open now through July.
