Underground work to bury utilities began in 2024, and construction is expected to be completed with improvements on the surface of the road in late 2025.
Travel Impacts - Summer 2025
Crews are reconstructing curbs, lanes, and utilities along Columbia Pike. Proceed with care and follow all signs and detours.
Detour Map
The right-hand westbound lane is closed between South Walter Reed Drive and South Courthouse Road.
At South Walter Reed Drive
- Week of July 7: Center lanes on South Walter Reed Drive approaching Columbia Pike will be closed for demolition
- Week of July 14: Repaving in center lanes; rolling lane and sidewalk closures during asphalt paving. Additional temporary closures through intersection will occur during repaving.
At South Edgewood Street
- Sidewalk closed for sidewalk work on west side of S. Edgewood St.
South Edgewood Street to South Cleveland Street
Week of June 16 - Mid July
- South sidewalk between South Edgewood Street and South Cleveland Street is closed for reconstruction
- The right hand eastbound traffic lane is closed to provide pedestrian detour
- Pedestrian access maintained to retail establishments with Columbia Pike frontage (2700 Columbia Pike to be accessible from parking lot in the back of the building)

- North sidewalk closed between S. Veitch St. and S. Courthouse Rd.
- The westbound bus stop at S. Barton St. has been relocated across the street to in front of Starbucks
- The westbound bus stop at S. Courthouse Rd. has been relocated to the east side of the street
Permitted Work Hours:
Sunday-Saturday, 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM (except Federal holidays)
Residents should expect to see and hear dust, mud, noise, debris, and temporary traffic and parking restrictions. In locations where parking will be prohibited during work, "No Parking" signs will be posted.
About the Project
This work is part of the Columbia Pike Multimodal project that will make Columbia Pike a safer, more accessible route for all users. Arlington is transforming this main thoroughfare into a complete street that balances all modes of travel and supports high-quality, high-frequency transit service.
In addition to visible improvements to the road, extensive work will occur below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes.
Streetscape improvements will include:
- Sidewalk upgrades, including widening where space is available, and leveling
- New streetlights
- Upgraded traffic signals
- Street trees

Public Process
During the planning phase with this project, staff met with adjacent property owners civic associations to discuss the Columbia Pike Multimodal Project and provide construction updates. Outreach will continue as the project moves forward.
